6th Int Congress of the World Federation of Skull Base Societies & the 10th European Skull Base Society Congress in Brighton, 16-19 May 2012

Dear Colleagues

On behalf of the British, European and World Federation of Skull Base Societies we welcome you to Brighton and the congress. The British Skull Base Society is extremely proud to be your hosts for this joint meeting of our societies and is sure that you will enjoy your stay in the United Kingdom.

The Executive and Academic Committees of the congress have developed an exciting programme. It will appeal to each of our constituent disciplines and encompasses every aspect of Skull Base Surgery. We hope that our pre-congress courses will entice some of you to come early! Our social programme will make all of you want to stay late! The congress title “Inspiration, Education and Exploration of the future” reflects the central themes of this meeting which embodies vignettes from skull base pioneers, round tables discussions, keynote debates on controversial topics, disease specific expert panels, focus groups on advances in surgical techniques and diagnostic developments, consensus groups on evidence-based treatment strategies, the management and avoidance of complications, instructional courses by the world’s experts and glimpses into the future.

This congress will provide an environment to network with colleagues from all over the world, renew friendships and to discuss common problems in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The trade is very well represented and looks forward to showing you their latest products and to exchange ideas with you about future developments and needs. Steeped in regal history and exuding Georgian and Victorian charm, Brighton is the perfect backdrop for your wives and partners to enjoy retail therapy and cultural experiences, all within a few minutes walk of the congress hotels. Travel links can hardly be surpassed. Brighton is just 30 minutes from London’s Gatwick International Airport and less than an hour from London itself.

We look forward to welcoming you personally to Brighton. It is our intention to make this an unforgettable experience from both an academic and social point of view.

Michael Gleeson, President Elect, World Federation of Skull Base Societies
Carl Hardwidge, President Elect, European Skull Base Societies

During the well-attended congress dinner, ESBS Honorary memberships were granted to Wolfgang Draf and Albert Rhoton.

Two pre-congress courses were offered: “3-D Anatomy and Approaches to the Skull Base” and “Cadaver Dissection Demonstrations on Different Skull Base Approaches”.
One post-congress course was offered: “Hands-on Course on Endoscopic Endonasal Skull Base Surgery”.

The response of the delegates on the organization, the scientific and educational aspects and the atmosphere of the ESBS Congress 2009 was overwhelmingly positive.
All three courses were highly valued by their participants and rated as extremely instructive, perfectly equipped and very well organized.

This confirms that the ESBS is successful in providing a multidisciplinary, scientific and educational forum on skull base surgery and pathology.
